Second Day

Second day

Breakfast in the Inn was at 8:30, we had a full English with coffee and tea.

After getting everything together we started the next day around 9:30. The walk left Grinton and took us through a few fields before getting onto the moorland to take us up over High Harker Hill. As we progress it starts to rain with a brisk wind. We continue for a while before deciding to stop and put on our ponchos.

As we are putting them on 2 walkers catch up with us. It is the only people we have seen today. After a chat they carry on and we get our selves sorted and follow. The rain continues and I have no signal on my phone which I was using for the GPS to guide us on the right path. After half an hour of walking I realised we had taken the wrong path somewhere. We descended towards a small road where there was a shelter.

Lost, cold and wet

Still no signal I was struggling to find out exactly where we were. After walking back up onto the moorland I had momentarily found a signal to relocate us. .Stupidly I had no maps with us and was relying on the GPS. A good lesson to learn. I returned to the shelter to find Jem and Bella After wasting around an hour we returned back up onto the moor and continued our walk.

We were now back on the right track with the help of the Cairns. It went on for miles with disused quarries and spoils . The rain did not let up so it was a case of keep walking and staying on the right track.

We eventuall arrive at a cross roads with buldings and sheep pens. Dent’s Houses. The farmers use them when they gather the sheep off the moors. We stopped here a while to drink a hot drink and eat.

We take the right fork and continue towards Aysgarth. The path starts to descend to fields and then a hedged pathway. We meet our next guest on the walk, a Highland cow and her calf.

Highland cow and calf

We arrive at Castle Bolton, a village with the imposing castle. It was time to stop out of the rain for 5 minutes.

We had another couple of hours to get to Aysgarth. My shoulders were starting to feel the weight of the backpack. I am guessing it was around 35 kilos!

Our next pause was at Aysgarth falls, very impressive after the rains.

We had another 15 minutes walk to get to Aysgarth, we were both getting tired as we had lost a couple of hours and it had rained all day. We crossed a few fields and arrived at Aysgarth and soon found the Pub where we were staying.

Finally got to the George and Dragon .

We got settled in put our wet things to dry on the radiator. Gems boots had started leaking on the walk, so she had wet boots and socks. They are Berghaus boots supposedly water proof! After we went down for a meal around 7pm. A couple of glasses of Black Sheep and fish and chips.
